2 earthquakes over 5.0-magnitude strike off NorCal coast, USGS says

EUREKA, Calif. (KGO) -- Two earthquakes with preliminary magnitudes of over 5.0 struck off the Northern California coast Wednesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

According to the USGS, a 5.7 quake hit off the coast of Crescent City near the Oregon-California border at 3:53 a.m.

A 5.1 quake then hit off the coast of Eureka at 5:45 a.m. and there was a 4.5 aftershock at 6:11 a.m.

The 5.7 quake was measured at a depth of 10 kilometers and the 5.1 had a depth of .2 kilometers. There is more potential for shaking and damage the closer to the surface an earthquake starts.

There was no tsunami warning or threat from these quakes.

No injuries or major damage have been reported.
